Driving instructor Training - FAQ's

Many companies now offer driving instructor training programmes, choosing the right one can be a difficult choice.  Please take the time to read through our FAQ to learn the facts about becoming a driving instructor.

How long does it take to qualify?
You will be able to work as a driving instructor with a local driving school within as little as three months.  Our training course has been designed to fit around your timescale, although the Driving Standards Agency (DSA) are responsible for providing test times and therefore this can cause some minor delays.

Can anyone become a driving instructor?

No. You must check that you're eligible to become a driving instructor. You don’t need any formal qualifications, but the Driving Standards Agency (DSA) insists you will need:

·  A full UK or European Union / European Economic Area unrestricted car driving license, held for at least four years

· To have not been disqualified from driving at any time in the four years before you train

· The ability to read a car number plate at a distance of 27.5 metres (90 feet)

· To be a 'fit and proper' person, in the opinion of the DSA

Are there any hidden costs with the Instructor College UK?

No. Our Instructor Training is fully comprehensive and all of the training costs are available upon request.  We are committed to delivering a high level of training to ensure the instructor passes the examinations successfully. Providing the student follows all the written advice and recommendations to the reasonable satisfaction of their trainer, and then relevant extra training will be provided at no extra cost.

What is a Fast-Track course?
We offer exclusive fast track courses subject to availability in your local area.  These courses have been designed to train the instructor thoroughly over a very tight timescale.  This would ideally suit those trainee instructors who have existing work commitments and those who are short of spare time.

Is my income guaranteed?
A driving instructors income is based on the instructors number of hours worked each week, as the majority of driving instructors are self employed.

Although an income level cannot be exclusively guaranteed the majority of established driving instructors earn a good wage with all the benefits of a company car and flexible working hours.

As a potential trainee driving instructor you are invited to have an informal chat to existing driving instructors who have trained with us to hear about their experiences

Can I work part time with as a driving instructor?
Yes. The Instructor College UK operates a preferred local driving school list – offering you approved driving schools which will offer you either a full time or part time position.

Do I get a choice of car?
Yes. The majority of driving schools will provide you with several options. You can drive a car of your own, or rent one of the driving school cars at a highly competitive rate.

The choice of car is yours.  You will have the option to have a new vehicle delivered to your door every 7 months.

Is there a time limit on the training?
No. Your training course can start whenever you are ready to begin.
